How to Get Computer Software Help

Does this scenario sound familiar? You buy a new piece of computer software, have trouble with the installation or operation, and are unable to reach any kind of technical support representative. You can get computer software help, you just need to know the right approach. First and foremost, understand what kind of technical support, if any, comes with the software you are buying. Some software titles have 24/7 tech support while others answer questions only by email.

If you purchased the software in a box from a retail vendor, the company contact and technical support contact information should be located in the instruction manual. If the software was downloaded, you should have received an email that explained all details about customer support and/or technical support for the product. Even if you are unable to get technical help from the maker of the software, all hope is not lost. There are other ways you may be able to fix the problem. Sometimes you can take care of a particular software problem at home or work without the aid of tech support.

Step one is to look for the obvious. If you are using a disk, check it for scratches and dirt. Cleaning a CD-Rom can take care of many glitches in operation. For downloaded programs, make sure your computer meets the requirements for running the program. Do not run other programs at the same time, and try to shut down and restart your computer to see if that makes a difference next time you start up the application. Sometimes it is a matter of needing more RAM for your computer. Many computers have extra slots for memory chips so you can purchase RAM if you need to and install it easily with little hassle.

You can also get plenty of computer software help on the Web. The company who makes the software might have a website with a Help section and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). If that doesn't clear matters up for you try surfing your favorite search engine for forums devoted to that particular software program. At these forums there is often a Troubleshooting and/or Help section where you can read previous posts and ask your own questions about the software and the problem you are having. Many of the people found on these forums are knowledgeable, friendly and happy to help.
