The Basics of Computer Software Utility Programs

When it comes to keeping your computer safe and running smoothly, there are variety of computer software utility programs for you to consider based on your needs. You may also hear this type of computer program referred to as a service tool or service program. These programs work to fine tune the operation of the computer and manage the operating system, application software and/or hardware installed. Utility software is commonly included with major computer operating systems.

One example of a common utility program is the disk defragmenter. This utility recognizes files with data stored in various fragments. By moving the fragments where they should be, close together, the disk drive is increased in efficiency. Disk defragmentation should be a regular part of your computer care routine, along with clearing cookies, temporary Internet files and computer history every so often. When not cleared unnecessary space can be tied up which may slow down your computer. There should be a defragmenter built right into your operating system.

Another utility tool that should be part of your system is the disk checker. The disk checker works by running a scan on hard drive contents to look for corrupted files and get rid of them so the drive can work faster and more efficiently. Something that may or may not come included with your computer is a disk cleaner, which locates unused files and applications. These cleaners give computer users help in managing and deleting data on their hard drive for the purposes of freeing RAM. More RAM equals more power and faster operation.

One of the most useful utility tools you will hopefully never have to use is the backup utility. With a computer software utility tool made for backing up data, you can copy all the contents of your hard drive to a flash drive, zip drive or CD-ROM in the event your computer crashes and you need to restore the data previously on your hard drive. If files are too large, there are compression tools that can make them smaller for storage purposes. The wide array of computer utility tools makes using our PCs and Macs all the more efficient. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the tools your computer has to offer.
