A Guide to Diagnostic Computer Software

Taking good care of your computer is easy with the diagnostic computer software available these days. There are a handful of good free programs out there, and many others that are paid either through a one time fee or subscription. These software programs perform a variety of different tasks to keep your computer running as good as new for as long as possible. As well as being used for preventative measures, diagnostic software is also used for troubleshooting computer problems. If you are getting unexplained pop up ads or your operating system is very slow you may have fallen prey to a virus, worm, hacker, hijacker or other computer malady.

The most common type of diagnostic software is antivirus software. There are freeware programs that offer some protection, as well as paid programs that provide maximum protection against viruses and other threats to your computer. These programs run regular scans to check for the presence of viruses. If viruses are found, the diagnostic software either heals or quarantines the file. This software may also alert you when you have stumbled across a dangerous website. Popular names include AVG and Norton's Antivirus.

Adware checkers are also popular, such as Ad Aware. This program has both a free and paid version. It not only checks for spyware and adware, it lets you delete those unnecessary cookies from your hard drive. Clearing this space can help your computer run faster and more efficiently. A related type of software is the Registry Checker, which checks your computer's registry for unnecessary file and potentially harmful files, then removes them. The registry is a complicated system and not something you want to snoop around in. It is very easy to get confused and delete an important file from the registry which can crash your entire computer.

Some operating systems such as Microsoft Windows have online utility centers where you can check for updates to your system, then download them directly from the Web. This is also something that can be scheduled to happen automatically. It is a good idea to keep your computer up to date in this manner and have some kind of protection and diagnostic computer software installed. This can save you the expense, time and hassle of having your computer fixed or replacing it due to viral damage that was unable to be repaired.
